Randy Tanner to Receive the 2020 V. Thomas Murray Founder’s Award
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta is an organization committed to defending the potential of youth facing adversity in order to create positive change. Our 2020 Founder’s Award recipient, Randy Tanner, has had a substantial impact on youth in Metro Atlanta while also exemplifying our agency’s core beliefs. This award is named in honor of the late founder of BBBSMA, V. Thomas Murray, and is given to a leader whose extensive contributions have had a lasting, positive effect on our community and agency.
Tanner is a life-long resident of Atlanta. He was raised in Decatur, GA and attended Druid Hills High School.
He has a Bachelor of Business Administration in Risk Management and Insurance from the University of Georgia, and a Master of Insurance degree from Georgia State University.
Throughout his career, Tanner has served in key leadership positions for numerous insurance industry organizations. In 1985, he became an insurance agency owner. Then, in 1993, he opened a new agency that has grown over 27 years to be one of the largest privately held Atlanta headquartered insurance agencies, known today as Tanner, Ballew and Maloof.
His dedication to BBBSMA began in 1991 when he became a Big Brother to Cody Howard. When Cody’s family moved to Denver, Tanner was then matched in 1995 with a second Little Brother, Adam Meacham. When Cody’s family returned to Atlanta, Tanner continued his official match with Adam, while also maintaining his close relationship with Cody.
Tanner served as an Ambassador from 1999 to 2004. He was also on the BBBSMA Board of Directors from 2006 to 2008 and from 2016 to now, where he is currently the Vice Chair. Every year since 1991, he has participated in the Bowl For Kids’ Sake event recruiting many insurance firms to bowl with him. Over the past 26 years, he has attended all but three of the Legacy Awards Galas, with his agency being a sponsor.
He is married to Diane Henry Tanner. In his spare time, he enjoys tennis, live music and political debate with friends who hold opposing views.
Congratulations, Randy! We appreciate the outstanding efforts you’ve made toward our mission.
