“The Big Spotlight” Highlight’s the Dedication of BBBSATL’s Champions
ATLANTA — BBBSMA'S "Big Spotlight" introduces the limelight to the dedication and hard work of our mentors, who not only impact their Littles, but the entire Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta agency.
In 2023, our agency saw a 68% increase in new 1:1 mentoring matches. 99% of our Littles were promoted to the next grade on time. And it’s all because of our BIGS! Thank you.
This week the spotlight is on Pastor Simmons! Pastor Simmons has been matched with his Little Samir for a year. As a new Big, he believes in a strong foundation when it comes to the influence that a mentor can have in a child’s life. We recently connected in a Q&A chat with Pastor Simmons. Here's the full read:
- Can you share why you became a Big?
During my childhood, I always wanted a father figure to look up to and spend time with. When I started playing football, the coaches filled that void for me. They left an indelible mark on my life that has made me who I am today. Their profound impact prompts me to pay it forward to another youth who may be longing for the same.
- How has a mentor made an impact on your life?
Playing football, I had multiple mentors who impacted my life. They encouraged me, scolded me, stretched me, and pushed me to be my best self. I believe that I am the man I am today because of the impact they had on my life.
- What has been one of the most rewarding aspects of serving as a BIG?
The exciting feeling I get when I see the glean in the eyes of my Little when I show up for a ball game or other activities. He looks at me with so much excitement and pride knowing that he has someone there to support him.
- What is one piece of advice you have for a new BIG?
As a new BIG, I advise them to work to build a strong foundation with the LITTLE to make sure they play a role in every aspect of the LITTLE’s life – personally, professionally, spiritually, etc.
- What are 1-2 simple and easy ways you support your LITTLE that go a long way and make a BIG difference?
My LITTLE loves sports. So, I enrolled him in the Athletic Ministry at my church. This affords him the opportunity to play basketball every weekend with other youth in the community while also learning to be a team player with good sportsmanship.
- Anything else you would like to share?
I am always honored to be a part of something much bigger than me where my impact can be felt for many years to come.
