Introducing Lance Horne—a Paraprofessional and Family Support Specialist of Dallas, Ga.—who is making a significant difference as a Big Brother with BBBSATL. In this Big Spotlight, Lance opens up about his personal journey, the commitment he made to himself, and how he fosters mutual growth and connection with his Little Brother, Kaiden.

Can you share why you became a Big?

I became a BIG because, when I was younger, I made a promise to myself that one day, when I was able, I would return the gift given to me by my BIG. This gift was the opportunity to make a positive impact by creating memorable moments and imparting valuable life lessons.

How has a mentor made an impact on your life?

Mentors manifest in various forms throughout different stages of life. Many of my mentors have emerged from the experiences of others rather than from direct interactions with individuals. I believe that mentors can also be figures whom you have never met, yet from whom you draw respect and inspiration

What has been one of the most rewarding aspects of serving as a BIG?

One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a mentor is witnessing a young individual evolve and mature into their true self. Additionally, serving as a positive influence can profoundly affect the lives of their entire family.

What is one piece of advice you have for a new BIG?

Becoming a BIG entails an even greater responsibility than one might expect. While your LITTLE will seek your strength and understanding, remember that it is equally important to recognize that you can also learn from them. Embrace this mutual growth and connection.

What are 1-2 simple and easy ways you support your LITTLE that go a long way and make a BIG difference?

One of the ways I show my support is by recalling something from our previous meetings whenever we see each other. This not only demonstrates that I was present but also emphasizes how much I care about him and our relationship. Another great way to do that is by taking pictures and having them to look back on.

Anything else you would like to share?

Being a BIG is one of my proudest achievements because it was a goal I established early in life, even before I fully understood the concept of life goals. The ability to be healthy, capable, and fortunate enough to offer a service that is invaluable is the LITTLE gift that continues to give in BIG ways!

Thank you, Lance, for being a mentor, role model, and friend to Kaiden. Your story is a perfect example of how Bigs can make a big difference in the lives of their Littles—and how the journey enriches both lives.
