The Big Spotlight: Matthew Ellsworth of Atlanta, Georgia

Meet Matthew Ellsworth—a former City of Atlanta police officer turned actor and tutor—who is making a big impact as a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta. In this edition of The Big Spotlight, Matthew shares his journey, what inspired him to become a mentor, and the joy he’s found in helping his Little Brother, Kingston, reach new milestones.

How did you first get involved with BBBS ATL?

“I first became aware of BBBS ATL while working as an officer for the Atlanta Police Department. I would see too many of our city’s children facing challenges without meaningful role models. It was disheartening to see how they could get themselves into not-so-great situations out of restlessness or boredom. Unfortunately, not-so-great characters often take advantage of these youth, so I thought I could do my part during my off time.”

How has becoming a Big impacted you personally?

“First and foremost, I’ve gained a great new friend! Beyond that, it has helped me develop better communication skills and has brought me a great sense of fulfillment.”

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your relationship with your Little?

“I would say the most rewarding aspect is how outgoing and positive my Little is! In today’s environment, I think we’re a little too isolated. Kingston, on the other hand, is very outgoing and has no trouble striking up conversations and making new friends. He has such a positive outlook on life, and it’s truly inspiring.”

What advice would you give to other Bigs about building strong relationships?

“Keep it simple! The visits and activities don’t need to be fancy or expensive. Usually, the most basic outings are actually the best!”

What are some goals or things you and your Little work on together?

“We focus on two main areas:

  1. Communication: In between visits, we text and check in with one another throughout the week. I’ll ask about school and his after-school activities.
  2. Goals: We try to work on achieving new goals—whether it’s learning to ride a bike or taking an art class.”

What’s one of your favorite memories with Kingston?

“One of our best outings was when I taught Kingston how to ride a bike! We spent some time learning the basics and made sure we followed the ‘expert’ guidelines (thanks to YouTube). After a while, I guided him down the driveway, and eventually, he took off on his own! Now, he loves riding his bike, and I think it’ll be a part of many future outings.”

What’s something people might not know about you?

“After 2020, I decided to leave law enforcement and pursue acting. With the support of my spouse, I’ve completed two acting intensives, obtained an agent, and landed a couple of solid bookings. I don’t want to be the next Brad Pitt—I just want to be a steady, working actor.”

What has surprised you the most about your Little?

“I was blown away by how sharp Kingston’s memory is—he can recall what we did for almost all of our visits. His mind is like a little recorder! He’s also very artistic, which I love. He paints and even makes his own little videos. I can’t wait to see what he does in the future!”

Thank you, Matthew, for being a mentor, role model, and friend to Kingston. Your story is a perfect example of how Bigs can make a big difference in the lives of their Littles—and how the journey enriches both lives.
