Meet Toby Douglas—Lead Level-Up Mentor at Young Middle School who excels at turning challenges into victories! Through Toby’s unwavering dedication, countless students have experienced transformative success stories. Dive into this exclusive Q&A session where Toby unveils his impactful mentoring strategies:
1. Can you share why you became a Big?
I became a Big because I saw something in today’s youth that I haven’t seen before. I worked in the Atlanta Public School system for 3 years and I knew it was more that I could do to help guide the youth to a better future.
2. How has being a mentor made an impact in your life?
Being a mentor has impacted my life in a positive way. It has really brought out the best in me for my community and the youth.
3. What has been one of the most rewarding aspects of serving as a Big?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Big is witnessing growth—watching someone gain confidence and being involved in their journey as they develop the skills that will get them through life.
4. What is one piece of advice you have for a new Big?
Have an open mind and be an active listener. Allow your mentee to build trust in you and help them to redirect when needed.
5. What are 1-2 simple and easy ways you support your Little that go a long way and make a Big difference?
One way I support my little is by fostering a relationship that encourages open dialogue, ensuring they know they can discuss anything with me while building trust in the process.
Second, is to always have open communication with them to let them know they are being heard.
6. Anything else you would like to share?
Be committed and open-minded to have genuine interest in your Little's development.
