Little KB’s story, from quiet to confident

Little KB joined the Level Up Program at Lithonia Middle School as a quiet sixth grader who struggled with social anxiety and self-doubt. New situations felt overwhelming and stepping outside her comfort zone was not easy. With consistent support and individualized mentorship, that began to shift.

Mrs. Martinez became someone Little KB could rely on. Their relationship grew into a source of trust and encouragement. Little KB began seeking guidance not just for herself but for her friends too, showing early signs of growing confidence. A safe and supportive environment, along with strong partnership at home, helped push her to grow academically, socially, and athletically.

A defining moment came when she considered trying out for the basketball team. Anxiety took over and she chose not to attend. With support from Mrs. Martinez, her family, and her coach, she found the courage to try again. She showed up and earned her spot on the team.

Since then, Little KB has spent two years as a dedicated member of the team. She has built friendships, strengthened her confidence, and discovered what she is capable of when she pushes past fear.

Today, she shows up as a confident, driven young woman who believes in herself.

Her story reflects the impact of mentorship. Support from caring adults helps young people take risks, grow into their potential, and see new possibilities for themselves.
