How mentorship is shaping Little LK’s future
Little LK joined the Level Up mentoring program at Herman J. Russell West End Academy determined to raise his grades. He cared about school and wanted to push himself like many middle school students. The difference was that he had a mentor beside him. Through his mentoring relationship with Mr. King, Little LK gained something every young person deserves: a consistent, encouraging adult who believed in him.

With encouragement and guidance, Little LK has become more intentional about his academic growth. He sets targets. He asks thoughtful questions. He reflects on where he wants to improve. His natural curiosity is now paired with purpose and direction.
He has a strong interest in science and history and an impressive depth of knowledge across subjects. What stands out most, though, is his focus. In conversations with his mentor, he talks often about improving his MAP testing scores and raising his grades.
A recent visit to the Georgia State Capitol marked an important milestone in his journey. During the trip with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta, he had the opportunity to serve as a Page and observe House and Senate resolutions in action. The experience provided insight into the impact one individual can have on a community and civic engagement.
Since that visit, his conversations have evolved. He speaks more about the kind of difference he hopes to make in the future. This exposure to new possibilities, combined with the steady belief of a mentor, has expanded his vision of what is achievable.
Little LK’s story is a powerful reminder of why mentorship matters. When young people are opportunities and a trusted adult who walks alongside them, they begin to see themselves differently. They aim higher. They grow in confidence. They begin to believe their goals are within reach.
