February’s Big Spotlight Highlights Brandon Bell’s Journey at Price Middle School

Brandon Bell

Meet Brandon BellLead Mentor at Price Middle School for the Level Up Program at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta. In our February edition of The Big Spotlight, Brandon reflects on key moments that have shaped his growth and introduces us to the inspiring community of mentors who encouraged him to achieve his full potential.

1. Can you share why you became a Big?

I became a Big because I was a product of Flint Community Schools, and I saw firsthand how our school district thrived on being a close-knit village. The teachers, staff, and the community worked together to support students, not just academically but also in developing as well-rounded human beings. The importance of being a great person and treating others with kindness and respect is something that has always stayed with me. I wanted to pour that same energy into others, especially those who might need extra or support to thrive in life.

2. How has a mentor made an impact on your life?

Throughout my life, I've been fortunate to have a group of mentors who served as roadmaps for me, offering guidance and wisdom when I needed it most. They not only allowed me to pick their brains on various topics but also challenged me to push myself beyond my own limits, seeing potential in me that I hadn’t yet recognized. A prime example of this is my elementary principal, Mr. Speights. He believed in me from the start and consistently gave me opportunities to thrive in different spaces, always ensuring that I walked away with a valuable lesson or new skill.

3. What has been one of the most rewarding aspects of serving as a BIG?

My biggest piece of advice would be to really get to know your mentee and believe in them, even when they’re unsure of themselves. I’ve had mentors who pushed me to grow, and it made all the difference. Don’t be afraid to challenge them but also be there to celebrate the small wins along the way. Just showing up, being present, and genuinely caring about their growth goes a long way. You don’t have to have all the answers, just the willingness to listen and support them as they figure things out.

4. What is one piece of advice you have for a new BIG?

One piece of advice I’d give is to encourage your Little to embrace their individuality. It’s so important to reassure them that they should feel proud and comfortable with who they are, no matter what. When they see that you appreciate their uniqueness, it builds their self-love and confidence. Remember, we’re helping shape the future leaders of tomorrow, so giving them the space to grow into themselves is one of the most powerful things we can do.

5. What are 1-2 simple and easy ways you support your LITTLE that go a long way and make a BIG difference?

For me, it’s all about being there to listen without judgment. Sometimes, they just need someone who’ll hear them out, and that alone can make a huge difference. I also love giving them the chance to teach me something. Whether it’s a game or something they’re passionate about, it gives them a sense of pride and shows that I really value their perspective. It’s amazing how much those little moments can strengthen our bond.

Thank you, Brandon, for being a mentor, role model, and inspiration to so many young minds. Your dedication reminds us all of the power of kindness, support, and believing in the limitless potential of our youth.
