Empowering Young Minds with The DeKalb Alphas Nu Mu Lambda Chapter: A Commitment to Education & Growth
ATLANTA — At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta, we are always on the lookout for opportunities that empower and inspire our Littles. Mental Health Awareness Month was a testament to the impact of community collaboration, as we hosted a remarkable Boys Empowerment Match Activity at our headquarters with the incredible support of The DeKalb Alphas.
The day was filled with excitement and learning, featuring two dynamic breakout sessions: one that taught our Littles the art of tying a tie, and another that focused on enhancing public speaking skills and building confidence. These sessions were not just about acquiring new skills, but also about instilling a sense of pride and self-assurance in those participating.
A special shoutout goes to the Nu Mu Lambda Chapter, the second oldest alumni chapter in Metropolitan Atlanta. Established on June 15, 1980, by a group of visionary Alpha men, the chapter was born from a desire to extend the spirit of Alpha into the suburbs of Atlanta. As African-American families moved into DeKalb County during the late 1970s, these thirty-seven founding brothers recognized an opportunity to foster economic and social growth in the community. Since its inception, the chapter, affectionately known as the “DeKalb Alphas,” has been a beacon of service, mentoring youth and advocating for important causes like voter registration rights.
The DeKalb Alphas Mentoring Initiative is one of their standout programs, providing young males from 3rd to 12th grade with a yearlong journey of enrichment, social activities, and seminars that emphasize academic excellence and social responsibility.
