Bowl For Kids' Sake 2013: Event Recap

On Saturday, March 16th, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta (BBBSMA) welcomed more than 500 participants to Brunswick Zone Marietta for our annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake (BFKS) event. With the help of all our bowlers and corporate and community partners, we raised a record-breaking $144K, directly helping BBBSMA support our Big and Little matches!

As our first fundraising event of the year, we are proud to have started the year off with a true STRIKE by exceeding our fundraising goal! From our radio hosts, Checka Cee with Wild 105.7 and Jazzy McBee and DJ Blak with Streetz 94.5, to the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders, to our very own BBBSMA Spokesperson, Lawrence Sidbury of the Atlanta Falcons, the crowd was full of special guests that kept everyone energized.

Thank you to all of our participating bowlers for joining the fundraising efforts and coming out to bowl! For every $1,000 raised, BBBSMA is able to support one Big and Little match for a year. A special congratulations to Big Sister Kelsey Ehlers, for earning the grand prize tickets to the NCAA Final Four weekend at the Georgia Dome with her Little! As the Top Fundraiser in our BIG Bowling Competition for our Bigs, Kelsey raised over $1,500 for the agency!

NIKE EVENT AT BBBSMA’S NEW HEADQUARTERS FEATURES LOCAL PRO ATHLETES AND CALLS FOR LITTLES TO ‘BE BOLD, BE TRUE’ IN CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH

In honor of Black History Month and to celebrate deserving youth, Nike hosted an intimate, grassroots event at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta (BBBSMA) for “Littles” (youth) and their “BIGs” (mentors) or parent/guardian. The private event, celebrating athletes that are “Rebels with a Cause,” featured multiple celebrity speakers, including (from L to R):

Group shot at Nike eventJanice McKenzie-Crayton, president and CEO of BBBSMA; Sam Crenshaw of NBC 11Alive, serving as the event emcee; Nike Shoe Designer, Jonathan Johnson-Griffin, the artist behind this year’s Black History Month custom-designed apparel; Warrick Dunn, retired NFL running back and former Atlanta Falcon; Anson Carter, retired professional hockey player; and Fred McCrary, retired NFL fullback and former Atlanta Falcon.

These special guests shared their journeys as athletes and professionals, described how they’ve strived to be fearless game-changers inside and outside of sport with a positive purpose, and what it means to “Be Bold, Be True.” – Nike’s theme for Black History Month 2013. Nike Sportswear Senior Footwear Designer Jonathan Johnson-Griffin also spoke about his journey as an African American designer, and the inspiration behind the 2013 Nike Black History Month footwear and apparel collection, encouraging Littles to dream BIG.

Janice McKenzie-Crayton, BBBSMA president and CEO, said, “We were proud to host such a special event celebrating Black History Month with Nike at our new location, ‘the House,’ in Midtown! Their inspiring stories of overcoming adversities, dreaming  BIG and making BOLD moves in pursuit of their dreams while being TRUE to themselves, is very much aligned with our unique mentoring programs and

BBBSMA agency mission: Providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” Similarly, Janice also spoke of BBBSMA’s bold move into the new house – with positive purpose – to expand our footprint in the community to help the growing number of children in need of mentors.

Our special thanks to Marques Oliver, EKIN-Atlanta, for his event vision and facilitation in making Black History Month a GREAT experience for Atlanta youth and to Coca-Cola and Jimmy John’s of Midtown for their in-kind donations of food and beverages.

Finalist artwork by Littles will be sold as an in-kind donation at future BBBSMA events. Non-finalist artwork is encouraged to be given to Bigs from their Littles as a thank you for their positive mentoring influence.

Bigs of the Year: Big Sister - Carla Stocker

Before Carla was matched in 2009 with Cheyenne, her Little was quiet and shy.  In just a few years, Cheyenne has blossomed and is much more lively and outspoken!  Mom, Angela, said, “Cheyenne has become more cultured and they are always doing something wonderful and exciting together.” They also do a lot of volunteering and community service for the elderly and less fortunate.  Cheyenne says, “Carla is everything I could ask for in a big sister, best friend and mentor all rolled in one.  She makes me feel special when she listens as if I am the only person in the room.”  Further, Cheyenne states, “ that her life has changed dramatically since I met Carla.  I have more self-esteem and I am not afraid to speak my mind.  Bigs are, without a doubt, the best thing that could happen to any child.”

We are very proud and thankful for the service and love both Don Freer and Carla Stocker have given to their Littles through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in metro Atlanta. It is volunteers like Don and Carla that make such a BIG difference in the success of our organization, by changing the lives of the children of our community for the better, forever.
